Systematic and Philosophical Theology

This course provides a detailed grounding in many aspects of systematic and philosophical theology. It is suitable for those who wish to prepare for a research degree, and for those who wish to undertake graduate-level study in order to gain training and experience in this area. In addition to the course modules, students may opt to take some modules from the MA in Church History. With the consent of the course director, students may be allowed to take a directed reading module. They complete their studies with a 15000-word dissertation.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in theology and/or religious studies, or a related subject such as philosophy or history; other candidates are considered at the discretion of the department. English language requirements: IELTS: 7.0 with no less than 6.0 in any element.

Course modules

Modules may include: research methods and resources; systematic and philosophical theology for newcomers: the doctrine of god; Aquinas and Thomism; la nouvelle théologie; the Virgin Mary in Christian tradition: history and doctrine; Christology; earliest Christian writings to the mid-second century; Dante, religion and culture; faith and reason; reading medieval theologians from Ansel and Ock.
