Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching

The course draws on the programme for applied linguistics and adds the dimension of teaching to its study. Students are introduced to the key ideas in linguistics and trained in research techniques. They then go on to choose from a wide range of optional modules, covering the areas of text and discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, vocabulary and teaching, the study of spoken and written language, syllabus design and methodology, as well as related options in world Englishes, literary linguistics, language and culture; they complete the course with a supervised dissertation.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) relevant linguistic and/or literary studies. Transcripts are required. IELTS: 7.0 (with no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Modules include: research methods in applied linguistics; 2nd language acquisition. Students then choose 15 or 30 credits from the following list: grammar in the classroom; intercultural communication; language teaching: speaking and listening. If students choose only 15 credits from the list, then they may choose to take 15 credits from the following: research in literary linguistics; business and organisational communication; narratology; dickens and language. Spring Semester students choose between 30 and 60 credits from the following list: research methods: corpus linguistics; English vocabulary: teaching and learning; psychology of language; assessment in the language classroom. Then, students may take up to 30 credits from the following (to bring their total number of taught credits to 120): consciousness in fiction; sociolinguistics of work; cognition and literature.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on assignments and a dissertation.
