Modern English Language

This course offers a wide range of modules which is ideal for those who do not want to specialise in their language study or want the flexibility of building their own programme. The course begins with an introductory course in the description of language and training for research, which is followed by options in applied linguistics, literary linguistics and world englishes.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements: 2.1 upper 2nd Class Honours degree or international equivalent. IELTS: 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Modules may include: descriptive linguistic analysis; psycholinguistics 1; psycholinguistics 2; old Norse texts; research methods in applied linguistics; investigating health communication; old English texts; grammar in the classroom; intercultural communication; advanced study module (medieval); middle English romance; literary linguistics 1; literary linguistics 2; teaching language and literature 1; teaching language and literature 2; world Englishes 1; discourse analysis 1; discourse analysis 2; vocabulary: teaching and learning; language and gender 1; language and gender 2; syllabus design and methodology 1; syllabus design and methodology 2; narratology; cognition and literature; research methods: corpus linguistics; what is literature; dickens and language; consciousness in fiction.

Assessment methods

All taught modules are assessed by written work of around 3,000 words or equivalent. The dissertation module is assessed by written work of 14,000 words.
