Communication and Entrepreneurship

This course provides students with an opportunity to investigate communication in the context of entrepreneurship and business. It introduces the multidisciplinary dimensions of professional communication, exploring in detail how linguistic analysis can illuminate and enhance communication in businesses and a range of other workplaces. The principle of language study combines theoretical and ideological dimensions with highly practical applications. The course explores the role of communication in business-related human affairs using a variety of approaches, ranging from discourse analysis and inter-actional sociolinguistics to corpus linguistics.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in in a related arts, humanities or social science subject. Transcripts are required. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Students take 60 credits of taught modules in communication studies: sociolinguistics of work; business and organisational communication; intercultural communication; research methods: corpus linguistics. Plus 60 credits worth of entrepreneurship modules: creative problem solving; finance and accounting; project management; marketing for entrepreneurs; innovation management; technology entrepreneurship.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a research project.
