History

This is a flexible course which provides an opportunity to develop and expand upon particular historical interests. Students are able to create their own programme of study by choosing particular pathways or combinations of modules from inside and outside the School. The pathways currently available reflect the research interests of staff and cover: medieval history; modern history; gender history; British history; warrior societies; Islamic and Middle Eastern history; Robin Hood studies; if they wish, students can opt out of the pathway system in order to develop their own interests.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in history or a related subject. English language requirements: IELTS: 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Modules may include: dissertation; research methods in history; memory and social change in modern Europe and beyond; exploring English identity; power and authority in the medieval world; heresy in the Middle Ages; (mis)perceptions of the other: from savages and barbarians to the exotic and erotic; the 1960s in Europe and America: social and cultural change; foreign policy and appeasement, 1933-39; villains, vice and violence: crime and punishment in late imperial Russia; the aftermath of war: gender and post-war reconstruction after the 1st and 2nd World Wars; Latin and palaeography.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include 20,000-word dissertation of original historical research.
