Electrical Engineering for Sustainable and Renewable Energy

This course is designed to provide instruction and training in the most recent developments in the equipment and systems used to interface and control renewable and sustainable energy systems. The course gives students an advanced and comprehensive coverage of the specialist engineering skills required by an engineer working in electrical technology for renewable and sustainable energy systems. The course provides a basis for a range of students wanting to engage in further study. This includes working engineers wishing to update their knowledge in this area or those students/engineers who wish to go on to do research e.g. to study for a PhD. It is also suitable for 1st degree students who wish to enhance their training to Master's degree level before embarking on a career in industry.

Entry requirements

A high 2.2 (or international equivalent) in electrical engineering or other electrical engineering related subject. English language requirements: IELTS: 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any element).

Course modules

Core modules: control systems design; renewable energy technology 1; power electronic design; power networks with laboratory; energy conversion for motor and generator drives; FACTS and distributed generation; advanced AC drives with project; sustainable energy futures; optional modules: technologies for wind generation; technologies for hydrogen transport economy; renewable energy technology 2; combined heat and power systems.
