Manufacturing Engineering and Management

The course provides graduates with a broad knowledge and understanding of advanced manufacturing technology, manufacturing management and human factors relevant to industry. The degree covers many aspects of industrial engineering and industrial management and is designed for students who want to appreciate how engineering and management are integrated so that the productivity of industrial and engineering companies is improved, the costs of manufacture are reduced and products and services are delivered when required. The wide range of optional modules will enable students to develop their interests in specific areas of technology including flexible manufacturing, robotics and process capability, management including supply chain management and operations and also ergonomics and human factors.

Entry requirements

2.1 BEng or BSc (or international equivalent) in engineering, computer science and engineering, mathematics, physics and chemistry; English language requirements: IELTS: 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Core modules: manufacturing practice; manufacturing process capability; quality management and techniques for industry; lean manufacturing; supply chain management; advanced engineering research project organisation and design. Optional modules: aerospace manufacturing technology; conservation and recycling of materials; design of facilities and operations systems; food factory designs and operations; heath, safety and risk; human computer systems; industrial ergonomics; innovation management; intelligent fixture technology; joining technology; managing operations; management science for decision support; flexible automated manufacture; rapid product development; sustainable manufacturing; project management; simulation and digital human modelling; integrated operations planning and control; risk and safety science for engineers

Assessment methods

Assessment of individual modules takes different forms, including formal examinations (usually at the end of the semester in which the module is run), essays, group and individual reports and oral presentations, project reports and other assignments to be submitted during the semester.
