The course is designed for science and engineering graduates who wish to develop expertise in modern high-performance materials; it develops an understanding of the properties for a wide range of engineering materials from polymer composites to light-metal alloys, the effect of processing and surface engineering on the properties of a material, and analytical techniques used for materials characterisation; it provides the knowledge and skills required for a career in materials research and product development of high-performance materials.
High lower 2nd Class Honours degree, or international equivalent, in engineering and materials, chemistry or physics. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS: 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any element) or TOEFL: 87 (with a minimum of 20 in speaking and 19 in all other elements).
Core modules: advanced engineering research preparation; advanced materials characterisation; processing of engineering alloys; environmental failure of materials; advanced engineering research project; organisation and design; materials design against failure; elective modules may include: polymer engineering; high-performance ceramics and glasses; fibre reinforced composites engineering; aerospace materials; automotive materials; electron-optical and x-ray techniques; joining technology; surface engineering technology; conservation and recycling of materials; advanced materials; lean manufacturing; rapid product development.
