Bioengineering (Imaging and Sensing)

This course provides science or engineering graduates from a diversity of backgrounds with the technical knowledge and skills necessary to develop a career in this rapidly expanding area; the principles of the course are highly relevant to the established medical device sector, the biotechnology industry and the emerging regenerative medicine industry; the course builds on the internationally leading research in biomedical optical imaging and teaching is undertaken by experts in imaging and sensing; students gains experience of the type of problems encountered by academic and industrial researchers, both via taught courses and project work; written and oral presentations are undertaken at various stages of the course.

Entry requirements

High 2.2 (or international equivalent) in engineering, physical sciences or closely related degree. English language requirements: IELTS: 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any element).

Course modules

Core modules: human structure and function for engineers; cell structure and functions for engineers; advanced engineering research preparation; bioelectronic and biophotonic interfacing; biosensing. Spring semester: digital signal processing medical device regulation; advanced engineering research project organisation and design; and either: imaging principles and technology with project; biomedical optics or imaging principles and technology; biomedical optics and with projects.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on project work. Written and oral presentations are undertaken at various stages of the course.
