Civil Engineering

This course provides a comprehensive programme of study across a range of subject areas. Students may prefer to opt for a more specialised approach by adopting a subject theme and choosing specific modules in the first 2 semesters with a research project related to the theme. The subject themes are: geotechnical engineering; management; pavement engineering; structural engineering; transportation; environmental fluid mechanics.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in civil engineering or closely related degree including study in core civil engineering subjects. English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.5 in any element).

Course modules

Core modules: research project literature review; research project organisation and planning; optional modules: finite element analysis in structural mechanics; wind engineering and energy; coastal engineering; advanced concrete structures; advanced pavement materials; natural hazards and environmental fluid mechanics; critical state soil mechanics; system reliability engineering; construction planning and processes; traffic engineering; advanced properties of concrete; geology for civil engineers; plates and shells; geospatial engineering 2; earthquake engineering and structural dynamics; environmental geology; steel structures; railway engineering; sustainable construction; pavement engineering; foundations and earthworks; geospatial engineering 1; construction management 3; environmental geotechnology.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a dissertation.
