Accounting and Finance

This is a specialist course designed to further existing knowledge of accounting and finance. It builds on the theory and application of accounting and finance principles and is designed to enable students to become financial specialists in any business setting, or to pursue further postgraduate study. Those with financial acumen have a key role to play in organisations. This course offers students the opportunity to enrich and broaden their understanding and appreciation of important topics within accounting and finance while engaging in current debate on the topics. This course includes lectures as well as the opportunity to interact and share views in smaller groups. Compulsory modules in key areas of accounting have a key focus on quantitative research methods, while a number of optional modules are available so that students can tailor the degree to suit their individual interests and career aspirations.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in any relevant degree (which must include a substantial amount of accounting) including accounting and finance, business studies, economics or management. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

The course consists of 6 compulsory modules spread across 2 semesters and a summer dissertation. In semester 1, there are 4 compulsory modules: corporate financial strategy; current issues in accounting; introduction to research methods; and further quantitative research methods. These provide a basis for further specialisation in semester 2. In semester 2, students take 2 compulsory modules: financial security valuation and financial statement analysis. 2 more optional modules allow students to tailor their degree to suit their individual interests and career aspirations.
