Economic Development and Policy Analysis

This programme explores current theories, issues and evidence in economic policy as applied to developing countries. It is ideal for students who have a particular interest in development issues and want to apply an advanced level knowledge of economics to practical and policy issues. The programme introduces a range of techniques for development policy analysis and reviews policy and practise in many of the most important areas of economic policy in developing countries. The core modules provide a solid grounding in economics, while specialised modules provide the opportunity to address current theories, issues and evidence in economic policy.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in economics. English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Modules include: microeconomic analysis; macroeconomic analysis; economic policy analysis; economic data analysis; advanced macroeconomic theory; international macroeconomics; behavioural economic theory; experimental methods in economics; labour economics; income distribution and poverty; trade analysis and policy; global environmental issues; applied money and finance; financial economics; behavioural finance; development policy analysis; development microeconomics; options and futures markets; decision-making under risk and uncertainty.

Assessment methods

Modules on this course are mainly assessed by examinations at the end of the semester in which the module is taught. Some modules are also assessed on the basis of coursework. Students also complete a dissertation.
