Secondary Education (History)
The course prepares students to teach in secondary schools (age 11-18). It closely follows the Department of Education requirements for initial teacher training. Students are expected to evaluate their experience in light of these requirements and participate in activities throughout the course to develop new skills and understanding. Time in schools includes: a period of school experience performing a variety of tasks and observations, and beginning to teach their subject; a 14 week period of teaching practice during which the student teaches across the secondary key stages; a school-based inquiry which is an opportunity to reflect upon and develop students� skills and insights, and to consider ways of promoting their own professional development; at the University students attend lectures and seminars addressing the specifics of teaching the chosen subject; whole school issues as part of the schools and society; the programme includes: the physical, social and emotional development of pupils; pupil behaviour; social issues in education; professional conduct and continuing development as a teacher; current development in policy and curriculum.
All applicants are required on entry to hold a UK degree or equivalent qualification; normally it is expected that 50 per cent of the degree is in the subject the student wishes to teach; other requirements: in addition students must hold English language and mathematics at GCSE: grade C or above; if the student does not hold these at the time of application, they must be obtained before the start the course; admission to the course is subject to a satisfactory medical report as the student is required to meet the standards of Fitness to teach; Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Enhanced Disclosure: all applicants are offered a conditional place on the programme and have to complete forms for this disclosure; in addition, students are required to disclose any previous criminal record.
The PGCE and GTP courses consist of 2 30-credit Master�s level modules which can be accredited to an Master�s in education; the modules are: learning and teaching; schools and society; if the student takes the PGCE course, they are based in University and undertake 2 intensive periods of school placement.
The 2 30-credit modules are assessed by a written assignment or portfolio of 5 to 6000 words; practical teaching is assessed by University tutors, school-based mentors and coordinators, and external examiners; account is taken of student�s work over all school-based elements of the course and their own written records of such work; students must satisfy the examiners in both theory and practice, and must satisfy the requirements for Teacher Standards; in keeping with the nature of the course, which is vocational and postgraduate in approach, there is no written examination.
