Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL)
2.2 (or international equivalent). Candidates should preferably have some experience of classroom teaching, or hold a 1st degree which includes language teaching methodology components, or have attended a substantial language teaching methodology course. Official written evidence of teaching experience/training should be submitted at the time of application. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element).
Core modules: the language learner and language learning; applied linguistics for teaching Mandarin Chinese; developments in language teaching methodology. Elective modules: cross-cultural communication in language teaching; research methods in teaching and learning languages; materials evaluation and design; learning to train; technology enhanced language learning; learner autonomy.
Each 20 credit module is assessed by a written assignment of 4000 words; 15 credit elective modules are assessed through 3000 word assignments; the dissertation (between 12000 and 15000 words) is based on a negotiated topic, arising from study through the course.
