Diplomacy

The course is suitable for those students wishing to pursue professional careers that are informed by diplomacy, mediation and negotiation within areas such as the civil service, commercial negotiation, defence liaison, international financial regulation and journalism. Students are introduced to the advanced study of diplomacy and negotiation, including traditional approaches, which conceive of it as a specialist form of statecraft, and modern conceptions, which embrace areas such as media and cultural diplomacy.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent); English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element).

Course modules

Modules include: the evolution of diplomacy; the law of war and peace; the theory and practice of diplomacy. Elective modules: contemporary warfare; air power; politics of south east Asia; strategy and security; China's international relations; terrorism; war, peace and terror.

Assessment methods

Assessment is typically by a mixture of coursework and examination, both of which will usually be assessed in the semester in which the module is taught. Students also complete a dissertation.
