Creative Industries

The MRes in Creative Industries offers you the opportunity to undertake in-depth study in an area of interest to you while developing your skills in research. You will spend one third of your time in the taught element of your course, covering your chosen subject and training in research methodology, and the remaining two-thirds in your personalised research dissertation. You can study within any of the Faculty's schools: Architecture, Art & Design, Creative Technologies or Media & Performing Arts.

Course modules

The course is offered as full-time (one year) or part-time (two years). The course has two units: Research Project (120 credits). This is the main part of the course, with an extended research project undertaken in one of the Schools in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries during which you will work with an experienced member of academic staff. Research Preparation and Development (60 credits). This includes a wide range of research skills, including: personal effectiveness, research management, professional skills, networking, research organisation, science communication, impact, literature review and career management.

Assessment methods

Teaching and Assessment: The Research Preparation and Development unit involves a number of taught sessions. These will be selected by you and your supervisory team from Faculty and Department subject-specific provision as well as from our Graduate School Development Programme. You will also refine and submit your research proposal as part of the unit. The Research Project unit is supported by a nominated supervisor with whom regular contact is maintained, usually through face-to-face meetings organised on a regular basis for the duration of the research project period. The supervisor will have expertise in your chosen research area. How are you assessed? The Research Preparation and Development unit has a number of assessments including a project proposal, literature review and reflective practice. The Research Project unit assessments include a presentation and a dissertation.
