Languages and Area Studies
The School of Languages and Area Studies (SLAS) is one of the largest, well-established departments of its kind in the United Kingdom. We currently undertake research and teaching of six languages (French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish and English as a foreign language) and associated area studies such as applied linguistics, francophone, communication and language skills, translation and technical communication studies. We offer a dynamic environment for the study and research of modern languages and area studies, with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
A good Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or a Master's degree in an appropriate subject. Exceptionally, equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications will be considered. Translation and Literary Studies requires English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 7.0 with no component score below 6.5. Other subject areas require English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
Research areas include: European studies; language and linguistics; sociolinguistics; translation.
