University of Reading

City of Rome

Our programmes cover ancient history, literature, language, archaeology, art and culture in a thriving Department of Classics with an international reputation. In addition to our strengths in established approaches to the ancient world, Classics at Reading has taken the lead in extending the boundaries of the subject to areas such as the reception of antiquity in the modern world, economic history and the history of religions. We have particular strengths in Roman history and archaeology, and long-standing links with the British School at Rome and Ca' Foscari University of Venice. We are a world-leading centre for the study of ancient languages (Latin and Greek of all periods and Egyptian), and for papyrology, epigraphy, textual criticism and ancient linguistics. We have a high concentration of expertise in Greek literature from the Archaic Period to the Roman Empire. Research in Greek art and archaeology is a particular specialism, for which the Department's Ure Museum, which holds the fourth-largest collection of Greek ceramics in the UK, is a key resource. Postgraduates are fully integrated into our thriving research culture. This includes weekly research seminars, attendance at which is part of postgraduate training, and conferences each year drawing scholars from around the world. Postgraduate students organise conferences and have their own work-in-progress seminar series and annual research colloquia. • Study Rome's history, archaeology, topography, demography, art and architecture, from antiquity to the present • Typically includes one term's residential study at the British School at Rome • Department rated third in UK for the quality of its publications (REF, 2014) • Tailored 'Approaches to Rome' module thoroughly prepares you for your time in Italy.
