English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics

This programme offers individual supervision for research degrees in all the main research areas of ELT and applied linguistics. In the first year, students attend the Doctoral Training Programme in ELT and Applied Linguistics, which consists of lectures and practicals covering a wide range of topics.

Entry requirements

A Master's degree in a relevant field; a 2.1 Honours degree; applicants should submit a well-defined research proposal with their application; applicants whose 1st language is not English must provide evidence with their application of proficiency in the form of an IELTS score of 7.0 (with no sub-test below 6.5), or an equivalent score on another recognised test.

Course modules

Research areas include: Academic literacy; discourse and sociolinguistics; english grammar; language teaching and learning; phonetics; psycholinguistics.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by: the MPhil thesis is a maximum of 60,000 words in length, the PhD thesis 90,000.
