Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
The MA in TESOL course aims to connect theory and practice in language teaching, providing up-to-date knowledge of principles and issues in the field, together with consideration of their practical implications. It is designed especially for those working in the field of English as a second/foreign language and has modules in language description, in pedagogy and in specialist related fields with this audience in mind. There are three possible tracks: the dissertation track, the taught track for experienced teachers, and the Portfolio track for teachers with limited experience.
You are normally required to have a good undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). If you have other qualifications and a number of years' relevant work experience then you may also be eligible to apply. For the campus-based MA, we require a minimum overall score of IELTS 6.5 with no score below 6.0 in any of the parts of the test, or a minimum TOEFL score of 570 (88 internet-based) accompanied by a TWE score of at least 4.5. For the distance study MA, we require a minimum overall score of IELTS 7.0 with no score below 6.5 in any parts of the test, or a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (100 internet-based) accompanied by a TWE score of at least 5.0.
