University of Reading
Secondary Education (Physics with Mathematics)
The science method programme has 2 major aims: to make sense of teaching, to provide a framework to understand teaching and to support professional development; to develop skills and expertise in teaching through explicit links between practice in well-established partner schools and theoretical approaches; all students have to be capable of teaching all science in the 11-16 age range; a science method tutor in the University and a science mentor in school share responsibility for training and assessment of each student; the emphasis is on taking part in an intellectually challenging and highly professional course leading to reflective and critical practitioners able to contribute effectively to high standards of learning; written assignments are designed to support students in planning their teaching effectively and imaginatively and to evaluate learning; facilities for borrowing books and information communications technology are very good; while each student has an individual programme of learning of science subject knowledge, many sessions are devoted to linking subject knowledge to principles of teaching in schools.
Degree in an appropriate subject; GCSE minimum grade C or equivalent in mathematics, English language and science; interview.
