Sustainable Livestock Production

Gain an in-depth understanding of the key principles of livestock production, and fundamental concepts with respect to sustainability. This programme prepares those working with animals for the challenges associated with livestock production in a variety of global contexts. Run by the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, and the University of Reading's Food Advanced Training Partnership (Food ATP), the programme offers six distance-learning modules and CPD opportunities, via a flexible, part-time distance learning programme. The modules address the key issues created by the world's continued population growth and increases in income that have resulted in a dramatic rise in demand for livestock and animal products (meat, milk and eggs), with global projections forecasting an increased demand to 2030 and beyond. Each module can be completed independently, but all six modules are required to secure the Postgraduate Certificate. This Postgraduate Certificate programme leads to a deep understanding of the role that livestock play in the livelihoods of stakeholders in different settings; critically evaluates the opportunities and constraints associated with livestock production from a social, biological and financial perspective; and creates and analyses programmes for the sustainable production of livestock in a range of global settings. **Careers** Graduates from the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Livestock Production will be well suited to careers in livestock production, management and science. This may be within both international and national corporations, non-governmental organisations and policy bodies, and research and higher education institutions. Are you already in a related career? You can use the PGCert to increase your skills, change direction, or build directly on your existing qualifications. The PGCert can also be used as the basis for a full master's qualification. Assessments in each module will be designed to develop and assess the analytical and communication skills required for these careers. If you are currently working in the field, assessments are also designed to be relevant to your current employment, and you will be encouraged to discuss particular projects with your employer to ensure research questions of relevance to your particular situation are addressed.
