Electronic Engineering

As a PhD student in Electronic Engineering at the University of Reading, you will be joining a vibrant research team and using your skills to explore key challenges in biomedical engineering, healthcare technologies, and human-machine interaction. Our research covers a wide range of topics, including the design of novel technologies to sense data from the body, control systems for motor rehabilitation, and design stability in haptic interfaces. Electronic Engineering is part of the University's Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Research Division, which means that you will have excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary training and access to clinical and healthcare expertise. This ensures that your research is well positioned to address important societal challenges. **Research areas:** **Sensors**: We are designing novel sensors with biomedical applications through research in low-power wearables, remote sensing of data from humans, wireless sensor networks, consumer electronics, embedded systems, energy harvesting, and Internet of Things communication technologies. **Human-machine interaction**: In the area of human-machine interaction, we are conducting world-renowned research into design stability and control of haptic interfaces (interfaces that provide "touch" feedback), design of robotic systems with applications in motor rehabilitation, and sensors to enable new ways of interacting with technology. **Instrumentation**: Our instrumentation research focuses on the development of terahertz, optical and electronic instrumentation, measurement techniques and signal processing for applications in disease diagnosis and medical imaging. It includes the development of new methods for interpreting biomedical measurements, drawing on aspects of control theory, system identification and port Hamiltonian analysis of physical systems.
