Supervision for the PhD research degree is available in all the main areas of classics and in the various specialisms represented in the Department. The University has a formal code of practice for research students, which ensures adequate supervision and appropriate training are provided. The Department assigns to each student a primary and at least one secondary supervisor with whom they will meet reguarly. In addition to a strong doctoral induction and training programme offered by University of Reading Graduate School, all research students take the departmental programme in Research Methods. This provides training in the use of specialised research resources, including topics such as: bibliography; IT skills; and research writing. Reading Classics PhD student reguarly present papers at conferences and they are encouraged to publish in national and international journals. PhD students are often involved in informal reading groups, and have recently hosted AMPAH, the national postgraduate conference on Ancient History. Doctor of Philosophy - PhD: Relevant Honours degree & Master's qualification.

Course modules

The following are the research areas and key staff concerned with supervision and postgraduate teaching in the main research areas: Greek literature from the Archaic period to the Roman empire; classical and medieval latin; ancient history; reception of classics; Greek and Roman art and archaeology; ancient religions; history of medicine.
