Biological Sciences

The programme will provide the opportunity to join international leaders in many aspects of Biology, from biomedicine to paleoecology. Your supervisor will be a leading academic in their field who will provide day by day guidance to help you develop your research skills. All students also have a supervisory group to provide additional support when required. There are first class facilities for all aspects of our research and we have excellent links with industry and research centres throughout the world. Postgrad group photographYou will be given training in all the skills needed to get you started on your research project and introduced to the scientific background through seminars or, if appropriate, taught courses. In some cases our students may spend time with colleagues in a collaborating laboratory to learn new techniques. All students will find themselves part of a research community in their specialism, with both work-related and social activities, and regular programmes of visiting speakers at seminars. There is an annual postgraduate symposium and we encourage students to present their work at conferences, often with significant help available for travel expenses. Research can be tough:we pride ourselves on the strength of our support networks, through other students, the staff in the department, and the services of the University. In addition to your own research you will learn generic skills expected of a graduate at PhD level through activities and courses run by the School and the Joint Faculty (GSDP). The department is proud of its international links and reputation and hosts students from all over the world. Both technical and academic staff are approachable, the culture is informal and friendly, and our former students work in influential positions in many countries.
