Medieval Archaeology

This course is for students who wish to develop their knowledge of the Middle Ages (AD 400-1500) through the advanced study of medieval archaeology. The programme focuses on Britain set in the context of Northern and Central Europe.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree (or above) or equivalent in archaeology or other related disciplines; students with little or no background in archaeological theory should take a module in this subject.

Course modules

Core modules: research resources and skills; issues and debates in Medieval archaeology; dissertation. Optional modules; archaeological thought; archaeological graphics; Medieval landscapes; Medieval Latin (one for beginners, another advanced); Medieval palaeography; 2 optional modules chosen from a wide range of options including; archaeology of the Dark Ages; the Twelfth Century; Europe in the later Middle Age; later Medieval religion and belief; burial archaeology; palaeopathology; the archaeology of food and nutrition; science and the dead; coastal and maritime archaeology; historical modules are also available.

Assessment methods

Dissertation.
