University of Roehampton
Primary Education (Key Stage 2)
The programme is made up of the following elements: School experience: 3 block placements, during which trainees progress from participant observer, via support teacher and sharing teacher, to lead teacher. Students work in a minimum of 2 schools for 93 days. Teaching and learning course develops students' understanding of how young children learn and what makes for effective learning within the early years. Early years education specialism covers the principles of early years education, the curriculum for early years and provision in early years settings, National Curriculum subject studies and Foundation Stage curriculum studies.
UK Honours degree at 2.2 or above or equivalent qualification. GCSE grade C or approved equivalents in English language and mathematics and science. At least 2 weeks recent work experience in a UK mainstream state school with the relevant age range before applicants apply. Broader and substantial experience of working with children of the appropriate age range. A satisfactory declaration of health and Criminal Records Bureau clearance. Please note that we only consider applicants who have already achieved 2 out of the 3 required GCSEs (or approved equivalents) prior to submitting their application. All students starting an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course in September 2013 are required to pass the Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy before the start of the programme. They should submit an application as early as possible via the GTTR (applications open early October) and then make arrangements to take the skills tests. It is strongly advised that students take the tests as soon as they are able. If offered an interview, having already passed the tests will greatly improve students chances of being offered a place.
