Children's Literature

This acclaimed MA/PGDip in Childrens Literature allows for the exploration of landmark books such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit or The Railway Children, alongside the contemporary innovations of Melvin Burgess or Emily Gravett. You will work with members of the National Centre for Research in Childrens Literature (NCRCL), who have international reputations in areas such as adolescence, critical theory, landscape, and philosophy. Although this is a literature programme, study is not limited to childrens books per se, but examines the relationship (both historical and ongoing) between childrens books and social constructions of childhood; creative writing for children is also explored on optional modules.

Entry requirements

Candidates are expected to have either a good first degree (a strong second class degree or above) in a relevant subject area (normally English Literature), or a teaching qualification with further relevant study (such as a Diploma in a Language area), or appropriate qualifications and experience in related areas, such as publishing, librarianship, freelance research etc. Candidates who wish to enrol as associate students are expected to satisfy tutors at interview that they are capable of working at the required level. Candidates whose first language is not English are expected to provide evidence of achieving level 6.5 in all bands of IELTS or equivalent.
