Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL)
There is a demand throughout the world for graduates with qualifications and expertise in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Our MA TESOL is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in English or Linguistics who are intending to have a career in English teaching. It will also be of interest to you if you are already a teacher of English but would like to advance your teaching methods.
The primary requirements are that candidates will need to have a good understanding of language and language teaching and a 1st degree, which should preferably be in a relevant field, such as English language and/or literature, another foreign language, linguistics, communication, or social sciences. Some experience of teaching English as a 2nd or foreign language will be an advantage. Each application is evaluated individually and candidates who would like to apply but lack some of these requirements should make contact with the programme convener before submitting their application. Successful applicants will also need to meet the English language entry requirements for Master's programmes, currently IELTS 6.5 overall with no less than 6 in each section or equivalent. Applicants whose IELTS scores are slightly below these levels may be able eligible for a conditional offer dependent on their successfully completing a pre-sessional English course.
