Terrorism and Security
This course will allow students to examine a wide range of topics including terrorist groups and their strategies and counter-terrorism policies in the US, UK, EU, Israel and Arab world. Students can also choose from optional modules on subjects including security studies, intelligence, terrorism in Europe since 1945, and terrorism in the Middle East.
A degree, grade 2.1 or above, in politics, history, sociology, criminology or a related social science and humanities subject. Applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully are welcomed.
Modules include: Terrorism; threat and response; terrorism in Europe since 1945; the Middle East and terrorism: security networks; intelligence and internal security; the secret state: domestic security in Britain, 1883-2012; international criminal justice; issues in intelligence; dissertation; terrorism and security practicum.
Assessment is through 2 essays per module each weighted at 50 per cent of the overall mark for the module. After the successful completion of 140 credits (4 modules) students proceed to the 14,000 word dissertation (60 credits).
