University of Sheffield
The MPhil and PhD are research degrees in which a student undertakes the investigation of a topic of personal choice and presents the results in a thesis of approximately 40,000 words (MPhil) or 75,000 words (PhD); after acceptance to the course, a student is assigned to one of the academic staff as supervisor, based on their intended topic; the MPhil and PhD, as is typical in British universities, are research degrees, so students do not do standard graduate coursework; instead, they begin researching a thesis immediately and spend their entire programme concentrating on this task; the general research areas supported by the faculty are: Early Christian studies; history; archaeology and historiography; literary criticism and cultural studies.
