Composition

This course offers an ideal opportunity for you to immerse yourself in the creation and presentation of contemporary music. You can choose to specialise in instrumental composition and explore a broad range of compositional approaches and techniques while collaborating with performers. Alternatively, you may specialise in electronic/electroacoustic composition which includes the opportunity to explore creative applications of analogue/digital technologies, real-time audio processing techniques, and aesthetics of sonic art.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 in music or a combined degree with a substantial music component. English language requirements: overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: creative portfolio; composition dissertation; collaborative project; research techniques, critique of research. Optional modules: creative foundation; composition techniques.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed on coursework, dissertation and a portfolio of original compositions.

Sponsorship information

University and faculty funding is available each year. The closing date for applications is mid-January. The department has a small number of tuition studentships available. The closing date for these is the end of April. You can also apply for a small grant to support your postgraduate research project.
