Reproductive and Developmental Medicine
The unit has ready access to those core research services provided by the Medical School including micro-array; DNA sequencing; real-time and flow cytometry core services; there are a variety of clinical and basic sciences projects in human reproduction and fetal-maternal medicine; each of these research areas has basic and human studies running in parallel with many examples of effective translational research.
Research areas include: biology of male and female infertility: gametogenesis; fertilisation and early embryonic development; molecular mechanisms of fertilisation and the development of novel methods of contraception; reproductive endocrinology; implantation and embryo development; the role of sperm surface receptors and in vitro sperm function testing; occupational and environmental influences on semen quality; human sperm transport within the female reproductive tract; role of growth factors in human reproduction; regulation of superovulation and ovulation induction; polycystic ovary syndrome; surgical and medical management of endometriosis; late effects of cancer on the reproductive tract; reproductive physiology and material foetal medicine: reproductive immunology; nutritional physiology of human pregnancy; maternal foetal nutrient substrate partitioning; placental nutrient transfer and membrane transport functions of the placenta; antenatal diagnosis of foetal malformations and chromosomal abnormalities; pathophysiology, prediction and prevention of preterm labour; pregnancy complicated by maternal diabetes; disordered foetal growth; public health nutrition: under- and over-nutrition in pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes; myometrial cell signalling; cardiovascular physiology of pregnancy and associated hypertensive disorders.
