Applied Professional Studies in Education

The Applied Professional Studies MA is an exciting distance learning programme that has been designed to complement our PGDE programme. It was set up in partnership with 9 subject associations as well as local authorities, to take into account professional development needs of practising teachers. The programme supports your development with specific reference to the teaching and learning of your specialist subject, you will receive tailored support and supervision to assist in identifying and developing a dissertation-level research project.

The Applied Professional Studies in Education MA is in a position to draw on a range of expertise from across the School, whilst also building on the highly successful Initial Teacher Education (Postgraduate Diploma in Education/PGDE) programme.

For those seeking to begin the studies with fewer than 120 Masters-Level Credits, please refer to the Education Teaching and Learning MA.

During the Saturday study schools you will explore a range of issues in practitioner-research methodologies and the development of students' projects, along with opportunities to share and debate ideas with a community of academics and peers. This is complemented by structured and targeted online materials on research methods and methodologies, as well individual supervision from a personal tutor.

Entry requirements

For this dissertation-only programme, you will need Qualified Teacher Status and a University of Sheffield PGDE with 120 valid credits, or equivalent. You are eligible to apply within 5 years of obtaining your PGDE qualification.
