Nuclear Materials Engineering and Science

This course covers the fundamentals of materials science and engineering associated with nuclear materials, systems, waste immobilisation and disposal. Graduates work in reactor operations, safety case development and waste form development.

Entry requirements

An honours degree in materials, metallurgy, chemistry or a related engineering subject from an approved institution. For MSc Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine, an honours degree in dentistry or medicine is also acceptable.English language requirements: IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: nuclear reactor engineering studies; nuclear fuel cycle; nuclear waste immobilisation and disposal; materials for nuclear systems; science of materials; materials processing and characterisation; materials selection, properties and applications; technical skills development; research project in the area of your choice. Optional modules: glasses and cements; advanced materials manufacturing � part 1.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by formal examinations, coursework assignments and a dissertation.
