Public Health (Management and Leadership)

This course features modules on the leadership and management of health services in developed and developing countries from Sheffield's management school. The teaching team also includes epidemiologists, sociologists, statisticians and staff from medicine, nursing and pharmacy backgrounds. There are opportunities to go on placement with partner organisations including Phase Nepal, Sheffield Children's Hospital, Manchester City Council and Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Each week, students will spend about 10 hours in lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Entry requirements

Candidates require a 2.1 Honours degree or relevant professional qualification and experience; English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in each part).

Course modules

Core modules: leading and managing health services; health care financing and economic evaluation; introduction to research methods; health needs assessment, planning and evaluation; promoting evidence-based health care; using policy to strengthen health systems; dissertation. Optional modules: students choose three from a range including: foundations of leadership and teamwork; advanced topics in leadership: leading in challenging times; communicable disease control; disaster and emergency management; public health informatics; social determinants of health inequalities; health promotion; epidemiology; systematic reviews and critical appraisal techniques; key issues in global public health.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework, examinations and a dissertation.
