Probability and Statistics

Postgraduate research gives students the opportunity to deepen their interest in the subject, and to develop practical, computing and mathematical skills of value whether they wish later to continue in academic research, or become a practising statistician or pursue a career in finance, commerce, business, management, manufacturing or the public service; the department offers the opportunity for study leading to MPhil and PhD degrees by research; it also offers a PhD with integrated studies, incorporating a substantial taught component.

Entry requirements

A 1st or good Upper 2nd Class Honours degree or an MSc in a relevant subject.

Course modules

Research areas: Stochastic processes and applied probability; mathematical biology; spatial statistics, image analysis; design of experiments; Bayesian statistics; mathematical finance; medical statistics; environmental statistics; archaeostatistics; computational inference; uncertainty and sensitivity analysis; extreme value theory; statistical modelling.
