Research topics: early medieval history; central and later middle ages; early modern British history; American Civil War; 18th-century social and cultural history; 19th-and 20th-century British social history; 20th-century British political history; 19th- and 20th-century European history; American history; history of gender; history of religion; urban history; imperial and international history; joint supervision can be arranged for candidates interested in an interdisclipinary topic.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree in history or related subject, normally at least upper 2nd Class or equivalent from a recognised UK or overseas university; there is encouragement for PhD candidates to take a suitable research training Master's programme before beginning independent research.
