Consultative Supervision

This course is suited to those who are members of the helping professions providing non-managerial supervision for practitioners in relation to their professional practice; this includes health care professionals, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, social workers and other similar roles; the course is flexible; on block teaching sessions students experience workshops, skills practice in small groups, video work and group presentations; this serves to consolidate learning practice in the field; students have an opportunity to study all aspects of theory and practice relating to 1-to-1 supervision, group supervision and supervision in an organisational context.

Entry requirements


There is no interview process, so applicants are selected on the basis of professional qualifications and experience, a written application, and two good references.
Counsellors & Psychotherapists
•Minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience with a range of clients
•Counsellors should be qualified to University of South Wales Diploma level or equivalent
•Should be BACP accredited or have completed enough counselling hours to apply for BACP or an equivalent professional recognition scheme

Helping Professionals
•Helping Professionals should have a professional qualification (nursing, clinical psychology, occupational therapy, social work, physiotherapy, art therapy etc) or equivalent
•Minimum of 2 years post-qualifying experience in their field

All applicants should:
•Be a member of a professional body
•Be receiving supervision from an experienced supervisor
•Have a supervision placement combining both individual and group supervision in order to meet the 40 hours supervision practice requirement.
•Upload two references with your application. One must be from your current supervisor confirming that you have completed a minimum of 400 supervised counselling hours and the other should be from your employer. If you are a therapist, your supervisor should confirm that you have completed a minimum of 400 supervised counselling hours in their reference.
DBS check required.


•Postgraduate Diploma in Consultative Supervision
•Two references uploaded with your application, one must be from your tutor.

Course modules


Modules include: Individual Supervision Skills; Group Supervision; Supervision at an Organisational Level; Supervision Research and Supervision of Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People.


Modules include: Individual supervision skills and strategies; group supervision and supervision on an organisational level.

Assessment methods


You will be assessed by one recording of a real supervision session with analysis, a file of evidence containing your reflective learning from home study packs, one 3,000 word essay and two 1,500 word essays, two skills observations and one group presentation.


Masters research and dissertation stage: Research proposal, presentation, dissertation (20,000 words).
