Sustainability

This research-led, applied, interdisciplinary programme explores sustainability in both developed and developing societies. It focuses on the global issues affecting the planet, including climate change and extreme events, social and health inequalities, poverty and resilience, global migration patterns, and sustainable business pathways. Students can choose optional modules covering a range of disciplines including remote sensing, GIS, consultancy, management and population. Taught by world-class academic experts from multidisciplinary backgrounds, the programme offers a solid foundation for developing careers in the public, private and third sectors as well as national and international agencies such as the United Nations, FAO and DFID. MSc Sustainability (Research) PG Cert and PG Dip are also optional routes.

Entry requirements

MSc: A UK bachelor's degree with upper second-class honours or higher in geography or a subject related to geography, or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University.

Course modules

Core modules: Introduction to Sustainability Science; Data Collection for Assessing Sustainability; Environmental Impact Assessment; Research Project/Dissertation. Example modules: Environmental Management Systems; Geographic Information Systems; Population, Poverty and Policy: International Corporate Social Responsibility; Consultancy Skills; GIS for Analysis of Health; Census and Neighbourhood Analysis; Overseas residential field course .

Assessment methods

Group work, coursework and dissertation and exams.
