Insurance law is a complex and intriguing subject that is fascinating to study and offers a multitude of rewarding career prospects. Insurance Law is in the midst of an unprecedented phase of reform and redevelopment, with long-standing principles being amended by the courts and Parliament. The Law School is home to one of the UK's leading research centres in this field, contributing to industry and government initiatives on insurance fraud, flood risk and the rise of 'big data'. The LLM in Insurance Law offers the opportunity to study insurance in depth and to reflect on the interaction of insurance with aspects of personal life, business risk and international trade.
LLM: Entry requirements: a UK bachelors degree with upper second-class honours or higher in law or in a degree with substantive legal component. See international equivalent qualifications www.southampton.ac.uk/pgp/entry Work experience also considered English language: band 2D.
Compulsory modules include: Insurance Law; Marine Insurance. Optional modules include: two modules to be chosen from: Insurance Law; International Commercial Arbitration; International Marine and European; Environmental (Liability) Law; International Trade Law; Marine Insurance.
Assessment will vary depending on modules selected, but will include exams and coursework as well as your dissertation. Students are required to complete a total of 180 credits across their modules (credits are based on Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme - CATS). The core LLM dissertation is awarded 60 credits, and students are free to choose remaining modules that total 120 credits.
