This programme offers students a high level of understanding of film studies as well as being the ideal preparation for doctoral research. It covers an in depth discussion of the most influential theories and methodologies in the field and provides an introduction to the latest debates and concerns, including issues arising from cinema's textual properties and questions regarding the medium's wider social impact. We have excellent facilities and host a series of regular talks from external speakers, including industry professionals and internationally acclaimed film scholars.

Entry requirements

MA: 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or equivalent, in an arts-related subject.

Course modules

Core modules: Classical film theory and textual analysis; key skills 1: research in film studies; key skills 2: preparing for the dissertation; post-classical film theory: history, reception, cinephilia; dissertation; 2 optional modules from: current issues in film distribution and exhibition; film policy: national and global perspectives; contemporary science-fiction cinema; screen stars in context; School of Humanities or Winchester School of Art MA module.

Assessment methods

The primary assessment method for testing your knowledge and understanding is a 4-5,000-word essay for each module, the topic normally decided in consultation with the module tutor. You will also be asked to demonstrate your key skills through participating in individual and group presentations, class exercises, essays and the dissertation. The 20,000 word dissertation is a core element in establishing the acquisition of appropriate skills and the application of research techniques. Your supervisor will be available to provide regular and supportive advice, guidance and feedback on your progress.
