Computational Engineering Design
This course is designed for engineering, mathematics or physical science graduates. It covers the latest design trends and computational engineering software. You will learn to use various software tools to assess the feasibility of designs and apply design search and optimisation principles to solve design problems.
Upper 2nd Class Honours degree (2.1 or equivalent) in engineering, mathematics, physical sciences or a related subject; those candidates with relevant employment experience will be considered if they do not meet the requirements; applications are assessed individually, and any candidates who do not match the standard profile but who have appropriate academic qualifications and/or industry experience are encouraged to apply.
Compulsory modules: Introduction to advanced mechanical engineering science (AMES); numerical methods; advanced computational methods 1; design search and optimisation (DSO) principles, methods, parameterisations and case studies. Core module: MSc research project. Optional modules: finite element analysis in solid mechanics; advanced finite element analysis; advanced computational methods 2; experimental mechanics; aircraft structural design; engineering design with management; computational methods in biomedical engineering design; microstructural and surface characterisation; applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD); advanced partial differential equations; machine learning.
