Statistics

This course will provide sound Master's level training in statistical methodology, with an emphasis on practical problems arising in the context of collecting and analysing scientific data. The programme structure allows students to select options ranging from the more theoretical aspects of statistics, including a module on research topics, to those which cover material focussed on real world applications of statistics. While studying for the degree, students will develop key transferrable skills, such as written and oral communication, the use of and some programming in statistical software, time management, and basic research skills.

Entry requirements

An upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a recognised university involving units in both mathematics and statistics. Each application is considered on its individual merits. Motivation and relevant postgraduate experience in a statistical environment are important factors that are taken into account. Other qualifications can be considered, e.g. professional development courses provided by the Royal Statistical Society, other professional training courses in statistics, or short courses/tutorials associated with statistics conferences. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each component (intensive summer language course available if required).

Course modules

Core modules: statistical theory and linear models; statistical computing (R and SAS); design of experiments; generalised linear models; Bayesian methods; survival analysis; research skills. Option modules: topics in statistics (research-led); modelling hierarchical (multi-level and longitudinal) data; computer intensive statistical methods; multivariate analysis; survey methods; bioinformatics; statistical genetics; clinical trials; epidemiological methods.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through examinations, presentations, coursework assignments and a final dissertation.
