Sociology and Social Research

This course offers conceptual and methodological training in sociological analysis; in addition to providing students with the skills to conduct research in a variety of professional contexts, it also provides a basis for PhD studies; the course teaches students how to formulate research questions in specific research contexts, select and use appropriate methods of data collection and analysis, manipulate and critically evaluate key concepts and issues, and present results in a systematic way.

Entry requirements

First- or upper second-class degree in a relevant discipline; in some circumstances, professional qualifications considered

Course modules

Core modules: project modules 1 and 2 (from a range of options); qualitative research methods; understanding modernity; understanding social change; plus a dissertation.

Assessment methods

Most modules are assessed, at least in part, by essays. Some modules are also assessed using oral presentations and group projects.
