Secondary Education (Religious Education)

The course equips trainees with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach religious education across the secondary age range; including some opportunities to know more about 16-19 teaching; candidates should note that the majority of schools in the Southampton partnership serve 11-6 cohorts and access to post-16 experience is limited to guest speakers; independent inquiries and observations in the main; the course is designed to prepare students to deal with all aspects of religious education in a multi-cultural society; the course content includes discussions about the nature of religious education in schools and the social; emotional and cognitive and moral development of children; as well as the more practical aspects involved in teaching such as lesson planning and assessment; students develop their subject knowledge in religious education through a range of approaches; workshops; seminars; lectures and demonstrations; simulations and micro-teaching activities; independent and group research; the central focus of the course is on teaching physical education in a challenging yet accessible way and understanding how children learn; the university based sessions often consist of practical workshops; where students can develop their musical skills as well as learning the pedagogical knowledge needed to teach.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree (in religious studies or theology; degrees in other subjects such as anthropology; history; humanities; sociology or philosophy may be acceptable if there is also evidence of the study of religion or religions) awarded by a British university or by the CNAA or an equivalent qualification; mature students with relevant previous classroom experience but a lower degree class are considered; GCSE passes (grades A-C) or the equivalent in English language and mathematics; enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Record Bureau; medical assessment; interview.
