Latin

An opportunity to study the language, literature and culture of ancient Rome at a deeper level, specialising in Latin. The course involves a tailored individual programme, with a core module in research training, methodology and generic skills-based learning. Students then may choose from a wide variety of topics in which they will be guided through their studies by an individual member of staff, who is an expert in the area.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree from a UK university, or its equivalent, in Greek or Latin. Overseas applicants whose 1st language is not English must, in addition, provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English: IELTS at least 7.0, including at least 7.0 in the writing component; TOEFL (minimum requirements) paper based: 580-600; computer based: 240-250; internet-based: 90-100.

Course modules

Compulsory module: Themes and methods in classics. 1 optional module in research training: Bibliographical, and reference works; special topics; textual studies; German for classicists; Greek and Latin literature; Latin for postgraduates. In addition to the core module, you must take at least 1 30-credit Latin module. The remaining 30 credits may be taken from the Latin options, from any other MLitt taught modules offered in the School (Greek, Classical Studies or Ancient History), or, with the permission of the relevant Head(s) of Schools, modules offered by other Schools. MLitt students write a dissertation over the summer. The optional modules offered each year depend on staff availability.
