Classical Studies

The taught progamme in classical studies is designed to offer postgraduate students the opportunity to study aspects of the ancient world in depth and also to acquire the research training that will enable them to undertake independent research in this discipline. It has flexibility to cater for the differing experiences and needs of individual students while also encouraging a collective sense of intellectual enterprise.

Entry requirements

A good 1st degree (minimum 2.1) with Honours from a UK university , or its equivalent; normally in classical studies, or an equivalent subject. All applicants whose 1st language is not English, require IELTS 7.0; TOEFL: paper based 580-600, computer based 240-250, internet-based 90-100; Cambridge CPE (Grade B), Cambridge CAE (Grade B), O Level/GCSE (Grade B); develop reading knowledge of languages relevant to area of research.

Course modules

Core module: Themes and methods in classics. If you have not studied either Latin or Greek to at least beginners' standard, then you are required to study either beginners' Greek 1 and beginners' Greek 2, or beginners' Latin 1 and beginners' Latin 2. In addition, you will study 1 module in either classical studies or ancient history. Students who already have the required language skills take 2 modules in classical studies or ancient history.

Assessment methods

MLitt: 9 months of coursework followed by a dissertation of 15,000 words. MPhil: 9 months of coursework followed by a 15 month period of research to produce a thesis of 40,000 words.
