Central and East European Studies

This course is offered in collaboration with The Centre for Russian, Soviet and Central and Eastern European Studies, School of Art History, School of International Relations, School of Modern Languages, and School of Divinity. Interdisciplinary study of this culturally rich and diverse region combining the fields of history, politics and international relations, languages and literature, and other aspects of artistic representations.

Entry requirements

Good UK Honours degree, 2.1 or equivalent (GPA 3.6 or better); students whose 1st language is not English must submit evidence of language competency.

Course modules

Students select 3 modules; they may decide to include a directed reading course in order to engage with a research field in which they have specific individual interests with the support of a specialist member of staff; students who complete 9-months of taught courses (graduate diploma) with evident success, can then progress to a 15,000-word dissertation over the next 3 months (MLitt); MPhil degree completes with a supervised research thesis of 40,000 words. The PhD does not contain any taught modules or classes. Students are assessed on the basis of an 80,000 word thesis due at the end of their period of study.

MLitt: Course work and 15,000 word dissertation. MPhil: Coursework and 40,000 word thesis. PhD: 80,000 word thesis only.
