Middle Eastern History

This degree program offers students of the Middle East the opportunity to explore in depth a variety of topics relating to the history and culture of this crucially significant region of the world. The program is highly interdisciplinary and draws upon the wide range of expertise within the School of History. The courses are open to students with an undergraduate degree in history or Middle East studies. Specifically, the course examines: The nature of the state; state-society relations; Islam; contemporary debates concerning development; democratisation; the idea of the nation and Iran's relations with the outside world. The course also looks at the history, and culture of the Islamic Middle East, from the birth of Islam in the region in the 7th Century, until the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517 and can examine the development of the modern Iranian state, from its inception under Reza Khan in the 1920s, to the present day and explores literature on chosen topic under the guidance of an expert.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree at UK 2.1, or equivalent, GPA 3.6 or better. Applicants whose 1st language is not English must submit evidence of language competency.

Course modules

Modules include: Themes in Middle Eastern history and politics (core); Arabic for beginners; 2nd Level Arabic; introduction to modern Persian; directed reading in Middle Eastern history and culture.

Assessment methods

MLitt: 9 months of coursework and supervised 15,000-word dissertation. MPhil: 9 months of coursework and supervised 40,000-word thesis.
